GUEST OF HONOUR 2009

This year's Ride 4 Kidney© is dedicated to Mark Nesbitt

Mark Nesbitt Mark Nesbitt is a 40 something guy who has been fortunate enough to be the proud owner of one his brothers' kidneys since 2002. He is now a media spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care in Ontario, and spends his free time annoying his friends and telling bad jokes to anyone unfortunate enough to be within hearing distance.

A former newspaper reporter/photographer and public relations professional, Mark and his wife Judy live in Scarborough in a small house with a bunch of rabbits and any other animals that seem to come home from the shelter.

Mark has had Type 1 Diabetes since the age of 5, and the diabetes is what caused his kidneys to fail in the Fall of 2001. After a short course of peritoneal dialysis, he received a living donor transplant from one of his brothers. On the other hand, he met Judy at a camp for kids with diabetes, so there was actually an upside to the disease...

After the transplant, Mark spent a couple of years working for the Kidney Foundation as a communications staffer. This is where he first met the human dynamo that is Deano. After working with Deano on the R4K event as part of his job, Mark continues to volunteer and raise funds for the event as a private individual.

" I am proud to have the 2009 Ride 4 Kidney© carry my name, and I want to encourage everyone to support this great cause. I've been fortunate to have a great family support system all through my experience with kidney disease, but many who don't can receive valuable assistance from the Kidney Foundation of Canada " ... Mark Nesbitt
