This year's Ride 4 Kidney© is dedicated to Giuseppe Sclafani
Giuseppe was born in 1972 in a small town in the northern part of Sicily. He moved to Canada shortly after. When he was 6 years old, he became very ill and was taken into Sick Kid's hospital in Canada. After many tests it was discovered that he had a cyst in his urinary tract, which was pushing urine back into his kidney. Giuseppe's parents were told that the cyst had to be removed before there would be kidney damage. In the process of removing the cyst they had noticed that part of the kidney was deteriorating. At that moment they decided to cut the damaged part out to save the kidney. For the next 11 years Giuseppe's family and he, spent time traveling back and forth from Sick Kid's hospital. Over the 11 years the kidney began deteriorating more and more. Doctors continued to cut off the piece that was damaged but unfortunately the kidney died and was removed by the time Giuseppe reached the age of 17. After his kidney was removed, doctors approached his parents and asked if they would like him to be placed on a donor's list to get a new kidney. His parents told them they would leave it up to Giuseppe whether or not he wanted to or not. The doctors advised him that he could lead a normal life with only one kidney. So at this point he decided not to be placed on the donors list and asked them to give it to someone who needs it more. Today Giuseppe's kidney has grown to twice the size to compensate for the one that is missing. For the most part Giuseppe lives a normal life and watches what he eats and drinks so that he does not put too much pressure on his kidney and Giuseppe gets a check up once a year.
